Class Announcements DID YOU KNOW...?What difference can reading for 30 minutes per day make?
· If a child reads or is read to for 30 minutes daily then by the age of 5 they will have read for a total of 900 hours.
· In comparison if a child reads or is read to for a total of 30 minutes weekly, then by the age of 5 they will have only read a total of 130 hours.
· Furthermore if a child reads or is read to for less than 30 minutes a week then by the age of 5 they will have only read a total of 60 hours.
Reducing the reading experience to just 30 minutes a week and a child loses 770 hours of nursery rhymes, fairy tales, and stories before entering school! That is 770 less hours than some of his/her classmates and 770 less hours of vocabulary development.
This means that a child should have a book in his/her hands for 30 minutes every day. Please continue to encourage your child to read every night. Remember it’s about building reading stamina; it does not have to be 30 minutes straight, work up to that. It also doesn’t have to be just the child reading, you can read a page and then they can read a page, you or another adult can read to your child, or your child can read out loud to a sibling or pet. Remember to try to make it fun!
